Since 1956, May has been designated National Bike Month, and its immense popularity keeps growing. It’s all about freedom, fitness, and fun, and it’s time to celebrate the joys of cycling.
People of all ages can participate in National Bike Month, and there are many ways to take a spin.
Bike to Work Week has become a favorite activity for bicycle enthusiasts across America. It takes place on the third week in May, and the third Friday in May is National Bike to Work Day. The event promotes the bicycle as a healthy and safe alternative for commuting to work.
The League of American Bicyclists makes it easy for anyone to join the festivities. You can find your local bicycling community by entering your zip code at the bikeleague.org app. There, you will have access to bike shops, clubs, advocacy organizations, instructors, and businesses that all believe in a bicycle-friendly America.
Sign up at BikeSacRegion365, and check out the fantastic events, including Mileage Madness on May 11th through the 19th. Log as many miles as you can!
On May 19th, it’s VeloRama. Join SABA and REI at Bike Dog West Sac for a get-together celebrating the completion of Mileage Madness Week.

There are tons of amazing prizes to win during National Bike Month with BikeSacRegion365. Whether you’re a bike fanatic or someone who hasn’t ridden a bicycle in decades, the adventures await you. BikeSacRegion365 encourages everyone in the greater Sacramento region (Sacramento, Yolo, Sutter, El Dorado, Placer, and Yuba counties) to ditch their vehicles and hop on their bikes.
Before heading out, be sure to plan your route to utilize bike lanes whenever possible. Wear a helmet and practice defensive riding. Unfortunately, accidents happen all too often. Common bicycle accidents can be caused by distracted driving, dooring incidents, improper lane use and reckless driving. Be sure to take precautions and make yourself visible to motorist to ensure you arrive safely at your destination.
Share your passion, connect with your fellow bicyclists, and get the kids involved. This Friday, May 17th, is National Bike to School Day; it’s held every third Friday in May. Children love experiencing the world around them, and a bike provides an excellent way to enjoy nature, feel the wind through their hair, and get great exercise as they head off to class.
Whether you join a bike club, share your bicycle trips on social media or just take a two-wheeled adventure with your family and friends, National Bike Month is a blast. Businesses can also get involved by encouraging employees to bike to work daily for a healthier way of life and to build a stronger community.
The beauty of bicycles is that they’re human-powered. That means no gas and no pollution. May is the month to gear up and show your support.
Grab life by the handlebars and go!
